Rioting breaks out in north Belfast after anti-internment rally is halted

Rioting breaks out on the Oldpark Road in north Belfast after police stopped a Anti-Internment League rally from proceeding to the city centre. It was on August 9th and four people were arrested as well as nine police officers injured.

The Anti Internment League recognises internees as political prisoners that are unjustly incarcerated using three methods.
1. Internment by remand - activists that have been charged with secret evidence, little evidence or no evidence so that they may be removed from the streets and political causes they contribute to.
2. Internment through Revocation of Early Release Licence - the British Secretary of State for the Six Counties has the power to return any early release prisoner to jail, without that person having the right to hear any evidence or allegations being made against them.
3. Internment through Miscarriage of Justice - there are a number of Republican activists that have been convicted by a single Diplock judge, despite protesting their innocence and the "evidence" against them being contaminated, incomplete or non existent. Paid perjurors have also been used. In addition, secret evidence has aldo been used to convict them. Evidence that is never disclosed either to the accused or their defence team. In the 26 counties, the word of a single Garda above a certain rank alone is enough to convict someone of membership of a "subversive" organisation.
The Anti Internment League is committed to highlighting and challenging these abuses of human rights against Irish citizens involved in political activism. We are an organisation that is supported by, and contributed to, by Prisoner Welfare Organisations, Republicans, Trade Unionists, Community Activists, Human Rights organisations and by Prisoners themselves.

We are totally non party political, and our events are open to all - regardless of religion, political persuasion, gender, sexuality, race or class. Our sole focus is on remembering victims of past Internment policies, while working towards ending those of today.
